p6420
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a newly fired Bizen hidasuki sake cup by Jumpei Kaneshige, the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige, the leading figure of the Kaneshige school.

This is a brand-new piece, fresh from the kiln as of September 2021.

Staying true to the Kaneshige family tradition of clay preparation, this piece is crafted from clay processed entirely by hand without the use of any mechanical mixers.

It was slowly fired in a custom-built electric kiln that allows for both electric and wood firing, a process that gives the piece its rich, deep colors and smooth, earthy texture, which are the hallmarks of this special kiln.

The color is magnificent, but above all, the texture is incredibly pleasant to the touch. The hidasuki technique, which leaves the clay surface exposed without any natural glaze, allows the superior quality of the clay itself to be felt directly in the palm of your hand.

The slightly large form features vertical spatula marks that shape it into a gentle four-sided vessel, and combined with the crimson hue of the hidasuki, it resembles a budding flower beginning to open.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.4cm × 6.3cm × Height 5.6cm

Jumpei Kaneshige was born in Komaba, Tokyo in 1972 as the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige.

He graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Waseda University in 1994.

In 2000, he completed his graduate studies in sculpture at Long Island University in New York, USA.

Following this, he returned to Japan and apprenticed under his father, Kosuke Kaneshige.
