p6445
Bizen Sake Cup
These are new Bizen sake cups that have just been taken from the kiln by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which Old Bizen was fired.

These latest works were removed from the kiln in December 2021.

To reproduce the firing methods of the Old Bizen era, the artist does not use firebricks, which did not exist at the time, but instead fires his pieces in an all-earthen kiln that defies modern firing conventions.

The all-earthen kiln itself becomes a giant piece of pottery, and as a result, it produces an exquisite clay texture that transcends modern aesthetics to approach that of Old Bizen.

In Mr. Soga's kiln, the earthen structure itself transforms with every firing, which causes the finish of the pieces to change constantly; this particular work features a color palette reminiscent of the Blue Bizen produced by the master artisans of the Showa era.

The primary characteristic of this piece is its silvery surface peppered with black particles suggestive of granite, overlaid with a golden *hi-dasuki* (fire-cord) pattern that appears to shift between blue and pale yellow.

The black particles that have seeped from the clay shimmer with a blue-silver hue when light hits them, creating a fantastical scene as they ripple within the sake.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (Please note that it will take some time before shipping.)
Diameter 6.9cm x 6.7cm x Height 5.7cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built an all-earthen kiln without the use of firebricks in Kuguï, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his career as a ceramic artist in 2013.
