p6462
Bizen sake bottle
This is a new Bizen sake flask, fresh from the kiln, by Mr. Takashi Soga, who challenges the aesthetic of antiquity by recreating the exact conditions under which ancient Bizen ware was fired.
This is his latest work, fired in December of the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021).

To recreate the firing methods of the ancient Bizen era, the piece was fired in an all-earth kiln—one that does not use the firebricks that were non-existent at the time, and where modern firing conventions do not apply.

The all-earth kiln itself functions as one massive piece of pottery; consequently, it imbues the work with an exquisite "tsuchiaji" (clay texture) that transcends modern beauty and approaches that of ancient Bizen.

In Mr. Soga's kiln, the earth structure itself undergoes a transformation with every firing, a characteristic that causes the finish of the pieces to constantly evolve. This particular work features a fine-grained, deep-hued "kase-goma" (matte ash glaze).

The extremely fine kase-goma possesses a rounded texture that feels unlike any other, offering a wonderful tactile sensation that makes you want to keep rolling it in your palms forever.

While kase-goma is typically moss-green in color, this piece is a matte black reminiscent of carbonized material, which brings the soft scarlet hues on the front into sharp focus.

While fulfilling the dream of enjoying sake from an ancient-style Bizen vessel, you will find yourself captivated by the gentle texture of the piece itself.

Includes signed wooden box (shiho-san style).
Rim 3.3cm x Body Diameter 8.5cm x Body Diameter 8.3cm x Height 13.3cm; Capacity approx. 370cc

Mr. Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

In 2009, he apprenticed under Mr. Jun Isezaki, and in 2012, he built an all-earth kiln without the use of firebricks in Kugu-i, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his pottery career in 2013.
