p6463
Blue-Turning Black Chalice
This is a "Sohen-Kuro" (Blue-Change Black) sake cup by Hiroshi Seki, who opened his kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture after training under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki.

The piece uses a black applied slip that makes it instantly recognizable as part of the Isezaki school. It is titled "Sohen-Kuro" because the areas where natural ash glaze accumulates turn a cobalt blue.

Over the golden-hued "goma" (sesame seed) glaze created by split pine wood, layers of cobalt blue "sohen" (blue change) emerge, and the way it flows into the interior creates a scene resembling a towering mountain landscape.

After being shaped to a degree using a mold, it was finely adjusted by hand, giving it a supple and delicate atmosphere.

Inside, a "glass kiln-change" has occurred where natural glaze dripped from the kiln walls, creating an indigo and milky-white scene reminiscent of Mt. Fuji, which provides a stunning contrast to the silhouette of the aforementioned towering mountain.
Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before shipping).
Diameter 11.6cm x 10.7cm x Height 4.0cm
Hiroshi Seki was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.

After graduating from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2013, he studied under Bizen ware Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki.

He became independent in 2017 and built his kiln in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 2019.
