p6467
Blue-glaze Black Spout Bowl
This is a "Sohen-kuro" (Blue-change black) sake pitcher (katakuchi) by Yuji Sekiguchi, who established his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture after training under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki.

The piece uses the black slip characteristic of the Isezaki school, making it instantly recognizable as one of their works. It is titled "Sohen-kuro" because the areas where natural ash glaze accumulates turn a cobalt blue color.

Beneath the golden-tinged "goma" (sesame seed) ash glaze created by pine firewood, the cobalt blue "sohen" (blue-change) emerges as if translucent, resulting in a striking color reminiscent of a blue-ringed octopus.

There is a significant amount of "sohen" from the rim down the sides, which takes on a beautiful indigo hue when it absorbs droplets of sake poured from the vessel.

After being shaped to a certain extent using a mold, the form was finely adjusted by hand, giving it a supple and delicate atmosphere.

The simple design of the pitcher makes it easy to use, and the meticulously crafted spout provides an excellent pour.

Signed wooden box to follow (we kindly ask for your patience as it will take some time to ship).
Width including spout: 13.0cm x Diameter: 11.0cm x Height: 10.5cm; Capacity: 300cc

Yuji Sekiguchi was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.

After graduating from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2013, he studied under Bizen ware Living National Treasure, Jun Isezaki.

He became independent in 2017 and built his kiln in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture in 2019.
