p6506
Bizen sake cup
This is a Bizen sake cup (guinomi) by Tsuneo Osawa, an artist who aims to create works that bring enrichment to daily life, with antique ceramics as his mentor.

True to Mr. Osawa, who has pursued the study of antique ceramics alongside his own creative work since becoming independent, this sake cup perfectly recreates the firing style and earthy quality of old Bizen ware.

The most striking feature is the scarlet color on the front, which, unlike the softer firing typical of climbing kilns, is a hard-fired, firm scarlet.

The rest of the piece features a very subdued, charcoal-gray kiln transformation, and the fine spatula work used in the finishing process feels less like shaping and more like forging the piece with a rugged touch.

Furthermore, this spatula work causes the stone particles sleeping within the clay to rise to the surface, creating a rugged, unyielding texture reminiscent of old Bizen.

When wet with sake, the scarlet color becomes deeper and more vivid, while the other areas transition to a darker, more muted tone, causing the scarlet to stand out as a highlight.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 6.1cm x 6.0cm x Height 5.0cm

Tsuneo Osawa was born in Akita Prefecture in 1964.

In 1982, he began his apprenticeship under Bizen ware artist Taisetsu Sueishi.

He built an anagama kiln and became independent in 1997, and has since been active primarily through solo exhibitions while continuing his research into antique ceramics.
