p6524
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen sake cup (guinomi) by Jumpei Kaneshige, the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige, the leading figure of the Kaneshige family.

This piece was fired for an exhibition held in Tokyo in December 2021.

Staying true to the Kaneshige family tradition of clay preparation, this work was made using only hand-processed clay, with no mechanical clay mixers used at any stage.

The clay, meticulously prepared with great care, retains its color even amidst the intense firing of the kiln changes, resulting in a refined and elegant texture that can only be described as masterful.

The fresh, vibrant scarlet hue, reminiscent of ripe fruit, is striking, allowing you to fully enjoy the true appeal of Bizen ware: the pleasure of looking at, touching, and "raising" the piece over time.

While the piece is enveloped in a rich, black-silver metallic ash-glaze kiln effect, the surface has been carefully polished over time. Despite the often rough nature of such kiln effects, the texture is remarkably gentle, making it a joy to hold in your hands.

With its simple and orthodox design, this sake cup features a carefully crafted rim and a generous interior, making it exceptionally easy to use.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before the item can be shipped).
Diameter 6.7cm x 6.2cm x Height 5.4cm

Jumpei Kaneshige was born in Komaba, Tokyo, in 1972 as the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige.

He graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Waseda University in 1994.

In 2000, he completed his graduate studies in sculpture at Long Island University in New York, USA.

He subsequently returned to Japan and apprenticed under his father, Kosuke Kaneshige.
