p6535
Shigaraki sake cup
These are newly fired Shigaraki sake cups (guinomi) by Tomio Ochi, who works diligently at his kiln under the guidance of Yasuhito Abe, pouring his still-unsatisfied aspirations into his ceramics.

These pieces were created using clay that he and Abe once collected together in Shigaraki, and, like his Bizen works, were fired multiple times.

For this series, he aimed for a more intense firing, subjecting the pieces to seven kiln sessions. By thoroughly firing the Shigaraki clay, which is naturally relatively heat-resistant, a glistening, orange surface has been achieved that appears as if it were coated in platinum.

Splashes of creamy natural ash glaze appear on the front and interior of the cup, with a unique, pale greenish hue that contrasts beautifully against the orange surface.

These sake cups are significantly larger than previous versions, making them interesting not only for sake, but also as small glasses for whiskey on the rocks or shochu.
Signed wooden box to follow (please note that there will be a delay before shipping).
Diameter 7.4cm x 7.4cm x Height 6.5cm

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School.

Starting in 1969, while working for a company, he devoted himself to studying painting and sculpture at Taka Art.

In 1976, he received instruction while serving as a kiln assistant to Yasuhito Abe in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the grounds of Yasuhito Abe's studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He applies the experience he gained from studying sculpture and painting to his work in Bizen pottery.
