p6549
Yohen Sake Cup
Born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki,
Koichiro Isezaki breathes new life into the world of Bizen ware with his exceptional sense and masterful sculpting ability. This is a newly fired Bizen yohen sake cup (guinomi) that has just come out of his kiln.

This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in March 2022.

While utilizing the characteristics of Bizen ware as an earthen material,
he skillfully incorporates essences from his roots in wood carving,
resulting in a unique piece that is immediately recognizable as the work of Koichiro Isezaki.

This is a rare kiln-change (yohen) effect from the anagama kiln, created near the side-firing hole located in the middle section of the chamber.

Compared to yohen from climbing kilns, this piece features a higher proportion of yellow sesame (kigoma) glaze. Centered around dynamic flowing sesame glazes that look as if they were poured from the back, it is adorned with a rich variety of colors, including scorched sesame and flowing sesame patterns.

The "nuke" (unfired/uncovered) sections react to subtle temperature differences, revealing about four distinct earth tones: a light gray close to the raw clay, the characteristic Bizen shiso (perilla) purple, a pale, slightly under-fired scarlet, and a vibrant red that glows as if heated, making for a fascinating piece.

The entire form was shaped by hand-molding rather than on a potter's wheel, and the meticulously detailed design radiates a dense presence, much like a tea bowl.

Signed wooden box to be provided at a later date (please note that it will take some time before shipment).
Diameter 7.7cm x 7.4cm x Height 6.0cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1974, as the eldest son of Jun Isezaki.

After graduating from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States.

He subsequently apprenticed under Jeff Shapiro, a potter living in New York City and a student of his father, in 1998.

After studying ceramics for approximately two years, he returned to Japan and began his independent career as a potter under his father, Jun Isezaki, in 2000.
