p6555
Bizen sake bottle
This Bizen sake bottle is by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same conditions in which ancient Bizen ware was fired.

To replicate the kiln-firing techniques of the ancient Bizen era, this piece was fired in a kiln made entirely of clay, without using modern refractory bricks, meaning that conventional modern firing techniques do not apply.

The clay-only kiln acts as a singular, massive piece of pottery in itself; consequently, it imbues the work with an exquisite texture that transcends modern aesthetics, rivaling that of ancient Bizen.

This work is a fine example of Soga's unique style of "haikaburi" (ash-covered) kiln transformation, utilizing his clay-only kiln. Through the gaps in the ash-covered kiln transformation—which possesses a luster as if wet—a rich, captivating earthiness emerges that draws the viewer in the more they look at it.

The intense kiln transformation around the exterior resembles a wet reef; it appears as if the piece was drenched in natural glaze within the kiln, then tossed into the open sea, only to be recovered after 200 or 300 years.

However, despite this dramatic appearance, the piece is meticulously finished, resulting in a superb tactile quality that makes you want to hold it in your palm forever.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time to ship).
Rim 3.6cm × Body Diameter 8.7cm × Body Diameter 8.5cm × Height 14.5cm, Capacity approx. 450cc

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built a kiln using only clay—without refractory bricks—in Kuku, Bizen City.

He became independent in 2013 and began his pottery career.
