p6564
Bizen Oribe Guinomi
This Bizen-Oribe sake cup is by Kenji Takenaka, an artist who transitioned from jewelry design to ceramics and studied under Jun Isezaki.

As the name "Bizen-Oribe" suggests, this piece features Oribe glaze applied to Bizen clay, beautifully capturing the allure of both traditional styles.

The Bizen clay base makes full use of its high plasticity, with intricate designs carved into every corner of the piece. The "crack pattern," which makes the vessel appear as if it is tearing from the inside, is particularly magnificent.

Taking advantage of the Bizen clay's ability to be fired unglazed, the Oribe glaze is applied dynamically as a design accent. It is masterfully adjusted to allow the fine combed patterns carved into the body to show through, while preserving the transparency of the glaze.

Inside, the glaze pools to create a jade-like hue, serving as another testament to how the artist utilizes the unique properties of both the Bizen clay and the Oribe glaze.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.4cm × 6.3cm × Height 5.8cm

Kenji Takenaka was born in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture in 1957.

Captivated by the medium of clay, he transitioned from a jewelry designer to a ceramic artist.

After completing his studies at the Bizen Pottery Center in 1986, he worked there as an instructor for two years.

In 1988, he began his apprenticeship under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, and subsequently established his own kiln in 1994.

Since then, he has focused his activities on solo exhibitions at department stores and galleries across the country.

He has been selected numerous times for the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition, the Okayama Prefectural Art Exhibition, and the Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Ceramics.
