p6595
Bizen sake cup
This Bizen sake cup is by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same conditions in which old Bizen ware was fired.

To replicate the kiln-firing techniques of the old Bizen era, this piece was fired in a kiln made entirely of clay, without using modern refractory bricks, meaning conventional modern firing practices do not apply.

The clay kiln itself acts as one massive piece of pottery, which is why it produces an exquisite clay texture that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches the quality of old Bizen.

In Soga’s kiln, the clay structure transforms with every firing, a characteristic that causes the finish of the works to constantly evolve. This particular piece features a unique, soot-like matte ash glaze (kase-goma).

This exceptionally fine kase-goma has a rounded texture that feels unlike typical matte ash glazes, providing a wonderful tactile experience that makes you want to roll it in your palm forever.

The underlying clay tone is a bright brown with a slight orange tint, possessing the characteristic surface quality typical of Soga’s work, complete with black spots from iron deposits and a mellow texture.

It is a fascinating piece that fulfills the dream of using a sake cup reminiscent of old Bizen.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.3cm x 6.2cm x Height 5.5cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built a clay-only kiln without refractory bricks in Kukuido, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his pottery career in 2013.
