p6615
Kuroshuten
This is a new black sake cup (guinomi) fresh from the kiln by Masahiro Miyao, who was captivated by Bizen ware—the art of earth and fire—and studied the craft in Imbe.
This is his latest work, fired in March 2022.

While Mr. Miyao is known for producing black works alongside his traditional Bizen pieces, this latest black work is particularly striking for its beautiful indigo hues.

In conventional black Bizen ware made with slip, what is often called "ao-yohen" (blue kiln change) can sometimes appear as blue tinges in scorched areas; however, in this piece, the indigo seems to bleed forth from a black slip surface that feels almost wet to the touch, reminding us once again of the profound depth of black-fired works.

Moreover, the black color has not been entirely replaced by indigo; the base retains a deep, clear black clay surface. Where the slip thins due to the variations in the vessel's surface created by carving, the ridges left by the spatula seem to emerge from within the indigo.

The interior, in particular, features a gradation of black and indigo that evokes the deep colors of the sky in the darkest moments before dawn.

The three-legged foot, which utilizes the high plasticity of Bizen clay, matches perfectly with the three-dimensional form heavily accented by spatula cuts.

Includes signed wooden box (shiho-zan).
Diameter 6.5cm × 6.3cm, Height 6.3cm

Masahiro Miyao was born in Tsuiki-cho, Fukuoka Prefecture, in 1970.

Drawn to the art of earth and fire that is Bizen ware, he began his path in ceramics in Bizen in 1991.

In 1995, he joined the Bishu Kiln and studied under Yuichi Yamamoto.

He built his own climbing kiln and became independent in 2001, firing his first pieces that same year.

In 2007, he received the Okayama Mayor's Award at the Japan Kōgei Association Chugoku Branch 50th Anniversary Exhibition and became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association.

He has received numerous awards, including the Okayama Prefectural Exhibition Encouragement Award and Prefectural Exhibition Award, the Tabe Museum of Art Grand Prize and Excellence Award at the Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Ceramics, and the Japan Kōgei Association Chairman's Award at the Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition.
