p6617
Bizen sake cup
This Bizen sake cup is by Takashi Soga, who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the environment of the era when Old Bizen was fired.

To replicate the kiln-firing style of the Old Bizen period, he avoids the use of firebricks—which did not exist at the time—and fires his works in a kiln made entirely of earth, where modern firing conventions do not apply.

The earth kiln itself becomes one massive piece of pottery, and as a result, it reveals an exquisite earthen quality that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches that of Old Bizen.

In Soga-sensei’s kiln, the kiln itself transforms with every firing, a characteristic that causes the finish of the pieces to change incessantly; this particular work features a dense, scarlet-fired surface with gray hidasuki (fire-cord) markings.

The mellow scarlet color seen across the vessel is not the result of under-firing, but rather the color of the earth after being thoroughly vitrified, perfectly recreating the intense scarlet characteristic of Old Bizen.

The hidasuki is also dyed a bright gray in accordance with the firm firing, reminiscent of the scenery seen on large pieces of Old Bizen where a black fire-cord is draped over a red base.

Despite being fired so intensely, the vessel has an incredibly smooth and soft texture, allowing you to fulfill the dream of enjoying sake from an Old Bizen-style cup while becoming captivated by the delicate tactile quality of the piece itself.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.0cm x 6.0cm x Height 5.7cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built a kiln made entirely of earth, without the use of firebricks, in Kugu, Bizen City.

He became independent in 2013 and began his pottery career.
