p6626
Kuroshuten
This is a newly fired black sake cup by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who studied pottery techniques under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and now works in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture.

This is his latest work, fired in May 2022.

Mr. Oiwa aims for intense firing in his work, and this piece was created as a black-slip work, which has been fused with ash-covered kiln changes to create a powerful landscape.

The appeal of this piece lies in its dynamic firing, which could be called a "black kiln change," where an overwhelming amount of natural glaze has washed over the piece as if to peel away the black slip.

This piece also features the smooth, ash-covered texture corresponding to the "sea slug skin" (namako-hada) seen in kiln changes from traditional climbing kilns, but due to the influence of the black slip, it has become a cobalt blue "sea slug skin," creating a jewel-like appearance that is delightful both to look at and to use.

The form, with its flared base, is reminiscent of Ryuichi Kakurezaki's early work, and the foot is particularly impressive, having been carved as if by inserting a spatula.
Original wooden box to be provided later (we apologize, but please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 7.0cm x 6.8cm x Height 6.2cm
Tomoyuki Oiwa was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1977.

He completed his studies at the Bizen Pottery Center in 2004 and apprenticed under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in 2005.

He established his own studio in Hyogo Prefecture in 2014.
