p6643
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a newly fired Bizen yohen sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

This latest work was just removed from the kiln in May 2022.

True to Koriki’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through daring kiln firing that fears no risk, the exterior features a rich, charcoal-like black ash-covered yohen, with some areas even showing a faint, shimmering silver ash-covered yohen.

Koriki primarily uses rice paddy clay mixed with mountain clay, and in this piece, an increased proportion of mountain clay has successfully produced a deep, intense scarlet.

The vivid scarlet is striking, yet, as one would expect from an artist who adheres to his masters' teachings and prioritizes clay preparation above all else, the color possesses a sophisticated elegance, devoid of any hint of coarseness or vulgarity.

The interior of the cup is also covered in a deep, vibrant scarlet, offering an exquisite backdrop for sake, while black spots—caused by the eruption of iron and other minerals in the clay—add a beautifully weathered texture.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before the item can be shipped).
Diameter 7.1cm × 6.7cm × Height 5.2cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has continued to hold annual solo exhibitions since then.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Sculpture Exhibition for the first time.
