p6646
Bizen ware sake cup
This is a new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln, by Yoshiteru Koriki, who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is the latest work, just removed from the kiln in May 2022.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of drawing out the character of the clay through daring, risk-taking kiln firings, this piece features a clash of black ash-covered yohen (kiln-transmutation) reminiscent of cooled magma, alongside amber-like, glassy yellow sesame glaze (kama-goma).

What draws the eye first is the unique protrusion, resembling a *raiza-mimi* (a lotus-seat-shaped lug). It was formed by a lump of clay used as a kiln prop that became fused to the piece by a massive amount of ash; Koriki-sensei left it as is, drawn in by its exquisite shape and positioning.

He mentioned he wasn't particularly conscious of the shape during the loading process, but its pyramid-like form makes it as easy to hold as a cup handle, and it is easy to understand why he chose to leave it, as one finds themselves instinctively picking it up by this protrusion.

While the front "nuke" (clear firing patch) reveals a hard-fired, solid clay texture, the areas surrounding the *kumadori* (boundary markings) retain a rich, viscous purple-shiso clay color, offering an intriguing, paradoxical expression where the intense firing actually highlights the quality of the clay.

Furthermore, the heavy firing has also acted strongly upon the boundary between the *kumadori* and the kiln-transmutation effects, resulting in distinct markings that shimmer with golden highlights, evoking the appearance of a rainbow arch.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (we appreciate your patience, as it will take some time before shipment.)
Diameter 7.5cm x 6.1cm x Height 6.3cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige, beginning in 1989.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and established his independence, firing his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition for the first time.
