p6662
Bizen "Hiki-dashi" Sake Cup
This is a newly fired *hikidashiguro* (pulled-out black) sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretension, despite having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in May 2022.

While this is a *hikidashiguro* piece, a style not previously seen in Koriki’s Bizen work, this particular cup incorporates cobalt in a quest to further evolve his black-ware series.

The artist used a slip containing cobalt and pulled the piece from the kiln mid-firing; as a result, a cobalt-blue kiln transformation has emerged on the front of the cup, as if seeping out from the clay itself.

The rest of the piece features the characteristic scenery of a *hikidashiguro* work, showcasing impressive, highly lustrous dark gray and black tones with a metallic sheen.

At one moment, it glimmers like metal, and the next, all light seems to be swallowed by its deep black, making the interior of the cup feel as though one is peering into the profound depths of space.

With subtle variations in color, such as the intensified metallic feel around the foot, this sake cup offers a renewed appreciation for the enigmatic nature of *hikidashiguro* and the mysteries of light.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 6.6cm × 6.5cm × Height 5.9cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he spent seven years from 1989 studying ceramics under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

He built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 and held his first firing the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition for the first time.
