p6663
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a newly fired Bizen yohen sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense while having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This latest work was just removed from the kiln in May 2022.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through daring kiln firings that fear no risk, the exterior displays a deep, black ash-covered yohen effect that looks just like wet charcoal.

While Koriki-sensei primarily uses rice-field clay mixed with mountain clay, this piece succeeds in producing a rich scarlet hue due to an increased proportion of mountain clay.

The unique, flushed scarlet color—reminiscent of glowing cheeks—is deeply evocative, and true to an artist who prioritizes clay preparation above all else in accordance with his masters' teachings, the dignified red hue is magnificent, entirely devoid of any garishness or coarseness.

The wide, deeply carved foot is reminiscent of his master, Sozan-sensei, and showcases a ceramic technique that has reached a state of refined maturity now that he has turned fifty.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.8cm x 6.6cm x Height 5.9cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989.

In 1996, he built an anagama kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become an independent artist, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Chanoyu Zokei Exhibition (Ceramic Forms for Tea) for the first time.
