p6665
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a brand new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln, created by Yoshiteru Koriki, who continues to pursue his own unique style without pretense while having apprenticed under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in May 2022.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through daring, risk-taking firings, this piece features a competition between the black ash-covered yohen, reminiscent of solidified magma, and the sea-slug-like texture of wet rock.

While the "nuke" (uncovered area) on the front reveals a well-fired clay body, the color of the clay itself is a remarkably soft chocolate hue, giving it a gentle expression that contrasts with its intense firing.

This chocolate color can also be seen deep within the interior (mikomi), creating a sake-viewing experience that allows one to feel the vitality dwelling within the clay, as is characteristic of pottery.

The sake cup is formed using the *tatara* technique, where a slab of rolled-out clay is shaped into a cylinder, with the fluctuations and wrinkles—impossible to achieve on a potter's wheel—creating a very soft and gentle appearance.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.2cm × 5.8cm × Height 5.7cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and became an independent artist, firing his first kiln the following year.
He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since.
In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition for the first time.
