p6672
Bizen Yohen Blue Sake Cup
Born in Imbe and having loved Bizen ware since childhood, Takashi Baba finds his life's joy in creating his work and firing his kiln. This is a brand new Bizen kiln-transmutation blue guinomi (sake cup), fresh from the kiln.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in July 2022.

It is a piece from his "Kiln-Transmutation Blue" series, an evolution of the black Bizen style using painted clay that is one of Baba’s specialties, where a portion of the black surface has transformed into a vivid cobalt blue.

While the intense cobalt blue coloration, dubbed "Kiln-Transmutation Blue," is certainly the most eye-catching feature, the black sections also possess a unique, gunmetal-like quality in response to the intense firing.

The sesame glaze (goma) flowing from the foot up toward the rim is also fascinating, with the somewhat greyish, subdued tone characteristic of Baba's kiln effectively accentuating the black and blue hues.

The modern spatula carving and split foot, characteristic of Baba who studied sculpture, are also intriguing, adding further depth and shadow to this work colored in black and blue.

The vibrant blue, cool black, and modern form come together in a trinity, resulting in a piece you will not soon forget.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before shipment).
Diameter 5.9cm x 5.9cm x Height 5.5cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ceramic artist Shosuke Baba.

Considering a future as a ceramic artist from an early age, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden his perspective on pottery.

In 2006, he graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in sculpture and joined the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture to further hone his skills.

He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

Currently, he is active primarily through solo exhibitions at department stores.
