p6676
Shino tea cup
Born in Imbe and a lover of Bizen ware since childhood, Takashi Baba finds his life's joy in creating works and firing kilns. This is a new Shino teacup, fresh from his kiln.

Fired around July 2022, this unique piece is made by applying Shino glaze to Bizen clay and firing it in a Bizen climbing kiln.

While the base follows the traditions of Shino ware, the overlapping effects of the climbing kiln firing create a new series that offers infinite variations to enjoy.

In a unique twist, rather than using the *bengara* (iron oxide) typically used to create the madder red characteristic of Shino ware, the artist instead varied the thickness of the feldspar glaze to allow the brownish hue of the Bizen clay to shine through, successfully expressing that same madder red.

A natural glaze from the climbing kiln overlays the feldspar glaze like a glass coating. The fusion of a clean white glaze with the faint green of the natural glaze creates a new "white"—one that is distinct from both Shino and white porcelain, harboring a unique, hard-textured, and multifaceted appearance.

The interior also features a complex layering of feldspar glaze, iron underglaze, and natural glaze, creating a distinct landscape reminiscent of a sumi-e ink wash painting.

No box included (*a paulownia wood box can be made separately)
Diameter 8.8cm x 8.8cm x Height 6.8cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ware artist Shosuke Baba.

Determined to become a ceramic artist from a young age, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden the scope of his pottery.

After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in sculpture in 2006, he honed his craft at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

He became an independent artist in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

He currently focuses on solo exhibitions at department stores.
