p6678
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a brand new Bizen yohen sake cup, fresh from the kiln, by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is a latest work, fired in May 2022.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through bold, risk-taking kiln firings, this piece is an exceptional result that leans heavily toward the "firing" side of the balance between "firing" and "clay."

The thoroughly fired ash-covered yohen has created a magnificent landscape that evokes the swirling flames within the kiln, with some parts featuring a viscous, lustrous sea cucumber skin (namako-hada), and others a dull, glowing ash coating.

The "nuke" (clear patch) on the front has been completely fired through by the intense heat, resulting in a clay texture reminiscent of blue Bizen, reminding us once again of the profound depths of the climbing kiln.

Furthermore, the variation in the nuke area is not limited to the blue clay texture; the "kumadori" section—the boundary between the ash-covered area and the nuke—features a metallic gold sheen that serves as a captivating focal point.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.8cm x 6.7cm x Height 5.9cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years under Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition for the first time.
