p6680
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a brand new Bizen sake cup, freshly taken from the kiln by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, even after studying under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is a latest work, freshly fired in May of Reiwa 4 (2022).

True to Mr. Koriki’s style—known for a daring approach to kiln firing that is unafraid of risk in order to draw out the expression of the clay—this is a simple sake cup that leans heavily toward the "earth" side of the "firing and earth" duality.

The piece is minimalist, featuring only a sparse dusting of natural ash glaze (goma). While it is a Bizen ware that encourages one to enjoy the scenery of natural glaze, it almost seems as if the clay is being desperately protected from the flames.

Overall, the piece has a moist and soft expression characteristic of earthenware; in particular, the interior of the cup is lovely, with each tiny grain of stone faintly tinted in a scarlet hue.

Though it is a very simply fired sake cup, the foot is crafted with a powerful, crisp design inherited from Sozan Kaneshige, making it an intriguing piece that offers a completely different impression before and after taking a sip.
Signed wooden box (shiho-zan)
Diameter 6.3cm × 6.2cm × Height 5.1cm
Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he spent seven years from 1989 studying ceramics under Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and became independent, firing his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual exhibitions ever since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition for the first time.
