p6684
Set of two Shino-ware small bowls
Born in Imbe and a lover of Bizen ware since childhood, Takashi Baba finds his life's joy in creating works and firing kilns. Here are two new Shino small bowls that have just been taken out of his kiln.

Fired around July of 2022, these are unique pieces created by applying Shino glaze to Bizen clay and firing them in a Bizen climbing kiln.

While the base follows the traditions of Shino ware, the overlapping effects of the climbing kiln firing result in a new series where you can enjoy infinite variations.

Typically, the madder red color characteristic of Shino ware is achieved using iron oxide (bengara). However, these are unconventional pieces where the artist expressed that madder red by varying the thickness of the feldspar glaze, allowing the brown hue of the Bizen clay to show through, without using any iron oxide.

Natural ash glaze from the climbing kiln overlaps the feldspar glaze like a painting, resulting in a unique finish that looks as if white and gold paint have been dripped onto the clean white of the feldspar glaze.

With a diameter of just over 11 cm, these small bowls are a convenient size, and true to their Shino-style, their white base makes them easy to pair with any dish.

No box included
Diameter approx. 11.4cm x 11.2cm x Height 4.5cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ceramic artist Shosuke Baba.

Considering becoming a ceramic artist from a young age, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden the scope of his pottery.

After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts Department of Sculpture in 2006, he joined the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture to further his expertise.

He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

He is currently active mainly through solo exhibitions at department stores.
