p6685
Bizen Yohen Sake Bottle
This is a newly fired Bizen yohen sake bottle by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just pulled from the kiln in May 2022.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through daring, risk-taking kiln firings, the exterior features a deep black ash-covered yohen reminiscent of wet charcoal, with faint, shimmering silver highlights appearing in certain areas.

While the scarlet tones of the Kaneshige school generally fade toward white as they are fired more intensely, this piece was fired at just the right moment in specific, limited areas, succeeding in retaining a rich, deep scarlet despite the high heat.

The vivid scarlet is almost searing to the eyes, yet true to Koriki-sensei’s commitment to clay preparation as taught by his mentors, it possesses a truly profound and tasteful quality without the slightest hint of ostentation or vulgarity.

Around the midsection of the body remain four potter’s wheel marks, resembling bellows, giving the piece a dignified presence that stands right between a standard sake bottle and an imo-tokkuri (potato-shaped bottle).

The brilliantly glowing scarlet has a unique, dry texture, exuding an allure as if it had already been polished by years of use with sake.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Rim 3.5cm × Body diameter 9.3cm × 9.2cm × Height 14.3cm Capacity approx. 460cc

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige for seven years starting in 1989.

In 1996, he built a climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to go independent, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000, and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the first time for the Chanoyu Zokei-ten (Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Forms).
