p6715
Shino teacup
These are new Shino teacups, just taken from the kiln, by Takashi Baba, who was born in Imbe and has loved Bizen ware since childhood, finding joy in life through creating his works and firing his kilns.

These pieces were fired around July 2022, and are unique creations made by applying Shino glaze to Bizen clay and firing them in a Bizen wood-fired climbing kiln.

While the base follows the tradition of Shino ware, the overlapping effects from the climbing kiln firing result in a new series that offers infinite variations to enjoy.

They are unconventional pieces where, instead of using the red iron oxide (bengara) typically used to create the madder-red color characteristic of Shino ware, the artist has varied the thickness of the feldspar glaze to allow the brownish-red color of the Bizen clay to show through, thereby expressing that same madder-red hue.

Natural glaze from the climbing kiln overlaps the feldspar glaze like a glass coating, combining with the clean white glaze to produce a soft green hue. This creates a new "white" that is neither Shino nor white porcelain, embodying a one-of-a-kind, hard-textured, and multifaceted aesthetic.

The interior of the cup also features a complex layering of feldspar glaze, iron painting, and natural glaze, creating a unique landscape reminiscent of an ink wash painting.

No box included (*a paulownia wood box can be made upon request)
Diameter 9.1cm x 9.0cm x Height 7.0cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ceramic artist Shosuke Baba.

Having considered becoming a ceramic artist since he was a young child, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden his perspective on pottery.

He graduated from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006 and honed his skills at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

He became an independent artist in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

Currently, he is active primarily through solo exhibitions at department stores.
