p6731
Drinking sake from a drawer
This is a hikidashi (pulled-from-kiln) sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is a brand-new work, just removed from the kiln in May 2022.

While this is a black hikidashi sake cup—a style not previously seen in Koriki’s Bizen work—this piece incorporates cobalt, aiming for a further evolution of his black-ware series.

By using a slip containing cobalt and pulling the piece from the kiln while firing, a cobalt-blue kiln-transmutation effect has emerged on the front of the work, as if seeping out from the clay itself.

The rest of the piece displays the characteristic scenery of a black hikidashi work, with a highly lustrous surface that has transformed into a bright gray reminiscent of Sue ware.

Inside the cup, amidst the aforementioned bright gray Sue-style surface, the cobalt is splattered like an action painting, creating a deep sense of aesthetic charm.

Around the foot, the metallic quality becomes even more pronounced, taking on the appearance of stainless steel; it is a sake cup that makes one feel anew the mystery of the hikidashi-black technique and the wonders of clay.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.3cm x 6.3cm x Height 5.4cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built a climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become independent, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Sculpture Exhibition for the first time.
