p6732
Bizen Yohen Sake Bottle
This is a Bizen kiln-altered sake bottle by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in May 2022.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of drawing out the character of the clay through daring kiln firings that fear no risk, this piece represents a superb outcome that leans heavily toward the "firing" side of the "firing and clay" duality.

The ash-covered, kiln-altered surface, which covers nearly ninety percent of the work, looks exactly like solidified lava, rising in jagged, craggy formations while incorporating various elements from inside the kiln.

Furthermore, because the front section was the contact surface, thick, molten ash has flowed into it, forming a massive white mass as if lava erupting from the seabed had created an island.

Due to the intense firing, the clay has been completely vitrified; the clay quality that peeks through slightly from the exposed area in the center forms a three-color gradation of white, reddish-brown, and dark brown, almost as if it had struggled to retain its earthen texture against the extreme heat.

In contrast to the intense firing that tests the limits of the clay, the form of this piece itself is a sake bottle with a delicate, sloping-shoulder atmosphere, making me feel that he has taken a step closer to the refined allure possessed by Toyo Kaneshige and Sozan Kaneshige.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Rim 3.5cm x Body diameter 8.6cm x 8.5cm x Height 13.2cm Capacity approx. 350cc

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige for seven years starting in 1989.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become independent, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition for the first time.
