p6792
Ibe Shuten
While being part of the Kaneshige lineage, Arimitsu Kaneshige continues to constantly question himself, and this is a newly fired Ibe sake cup created by him as a potter in his own right.

This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in November 2022.

Created using a newly designed "tsuchigama" (earth kiln)—an anagama kiln made solely of clay without the use of firebricks—this piece represents a fusion of the Kaneshige firing style with a unique kiln design.

While the overall texture of the clay inherits the characteristics of the traditional ta-tsuchi (field clay) Bizen ware, the addition of the "earth kiln" firing process, which strips away the superfluous, has resulted in a piece that sharpens the charm known as the "flavor" of Bizen ware to its absolute pinnacle.

There are always trends, large or small, within Bizen ware, and sometimes these firing styles have acted as a lid, obscuring the essence of Bizen ware itself.

However, this work was fired inside a clay-only kiln without firebricks, and further placed in a sagger to protect it from direct flames and smoke, resulting in a piece that deeply captures the essence of Bizen ware.

It has been designed with a singular focus on how best to deliver liquid to the mouth using the finest Bizen clay, ensuring it does not alter the taste of the sake while still allowing one to fully enjoy the pleasures of earthenware.

This is a sake cup created by a potter who, having lived through struggles and obsession with kiln changes, form, and status, has evolved from being the son of Sozan Kaneshige to becoming Arimitsu Kaneshige, and now, simply a potter of Ibe.
Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time for shipping).
Diameter 6.3cm x 6.3cm x Height 5.1cm
Arimitsu Kaneshige was born as the third son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder Sozan Kaneshige.

He began learning pottery techniques under his father, Sozan Kaneshige, in 1975.

He became independent in 1980 and held his first solo exhibition in Okayama.

He currently focuses on tea ceramics such as tea bowls, water jars, and flower vases, as well as tableware.

For his beloved tea bowls, he places particular importance on the interior form (mikomi), pursuing a balance between ease of use and the exterior.

He has received awards including the Sanyo Shimbun Prize at the Prefectural Exhibition, the Encouragement Prize at the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition, and the Tanko Biennale Encouragement Prize.

He received the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 2002 and the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award in 2018.

In 2019, he was designated as a holder of Okayama Prefecture-designated Important Intangible Cultural Property.

He is also dedicated to solo exhibitions, which are held in various locations both within and outside the prefecture.
