p6793
Ibe Yunomi
This is a brand new Ibe tea cup, freshly fired from the kiln by Mr. Yuho Kaneshige, a potter who, while remaining part of the Kaneshige lineage, constantly challenges himself to question his own craft as a singular artisan.

This is the latest work, freshly fired in November 2022.

The piece was created using a newly designed "tsuchigama" (earth kiln)—an anagama kiln constructed solely from clay without the use of firebricks—resulting in a fusion of traditional Kaneshige firing techniques and the unique properties of this kiln.

Although Mr. Yuho originally poured his heart and soul into creating tableware, in recent years he has focused his activities primarily on tea ceremony ceramics, intentionally refraining from releasing tableware.

This piece is a tea cup that Mr. Yuho has worked on for the first time in a long while; it is no exaggeration to say that this work transcends tea ceramics to become the ultimate piece of tableware.

The techniques cultivated through his signature symmetrical and serene tea bowls have been directly applied here, resulting in an exquisite tea cup specialized for drinking liquids, featuring a superior clay texture and an optimal rim for sipping.

The soft surface, made from the highest quality clay, is fired to perfection; when in use, it absorbs moisture to feel supple like human skin, creating a tender texture that even the creator, Mr. Yuho, finds captivating.

Around the waist, there is a unique kiln transformation that resembles a round hidasuki (fire-cord) pattern. Mr. Yuho aimed for this subtle, blushing effect by placing small pieces of charcoal, creating a truly charming accent that is not immediately noticeable, but captures the heart the moment it catches the eye.

According to Mr. Yuho, the clay surface is very sensitive and easily stains with tea; he notes that it will develop more beautifully if washed promptly after use.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (we apologize, but please allow some time for shipping.)
Diameter 7.1cm × 7.1cm × Height 8.7cm

Mr. Yuho Kaneshige was born as the third son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder, Mr. Sozan Kaneshige.

He began learning pottery techniques under his father, Mr. Sozan Kaneshige, in 1975.

He became independent in 1980 and held his first solo exhibition in Okayama.

He currently focuses on creating tea ceramics such as tea bowls, water jars, and flower vases, as well as tableware.

In his tea bowls, which he particularly loves, he places importance on the interior design (mikomi) and pursues a balance between ease of use and the exterior form.

He has received the Sanyo Shimbun Award at the Prefectural Exhibition, the Encouragement Award at the Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Forms, and the Tanko Biennale Encouragement Award, among others.

In 2002, he received the Japan Ceramic Society Award, and in 2018, the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award.

In 2019, he was certified as a holder of an Okayama Prefectural Designated Important Intangible Cultural Property.

He is also dedicated to his solo exhibitions, which are held at various locations both within and outside the prefecture.
