p6797
Ibe Tokkuri
This is a newly fired Ibe tokkuri (sake bottle) by Arimasa Kaneshige, an artist who, while rooted in the Kaneshige tradition, constantly questions himself and creates his work as an individual potter.
This latest work was just removed from the kiln in November 2022.

It was fired in a newly designed "tsuchigama" (earth kiln)—a kiln constructed solely from clay without the use of refractory bricks—resulting in a piece that fuses the Kaneshige firing style with this unique kiln.

Looking at the overall clay quality and hi-iro (scarlet) flame markings, one can see the characteristics of the Kaneshige lineage using rice-field clay, but interspersed are landscapes reminiscent of old Bizen—the "hiekare" (cool, withered) look and textures that appear fired to the core—suggesting that the scale of his work has taken a step forward.

The "nuke" (clear areas) on the front and the back display the deep, flavorful quality of the finest rice-field clay. Furthermore, the texture possesses an exquisite roundness, making this piece a hybrid of the Kaneshige style and old Bizen, not just in color but in the tactile experience of use.

The hue and texture of the ash-covered kiln changes are of a high quality typical of Arimasa-sensei, and the beautiful mouse-gray surface, combined with meticulous finishing, provides a superb texture so pleasant that you will want to polish it with sake forever.

While the majestic nuke on the front is magnificent, even more fascinating are the various large and small nuke scattered across the entire piece. These areas possess not only scarlet tones but also a worn, matte finish reminiscent of old Bizen, which is characteristic of pieces from this "earth kiln" that combine old Bizen aesthetics with the features of a Kaneshige climbing kiln.

As you hold it in your hands and trace the contours of the surface, you are struck by how such a magnificent presence can be achieved despite the piece being covered in bumps and hollows rather than being a perfect sphere. It brings to mind the face of Arimasa-sensei, who might laugh and say, "Even a tokkuri made by a man who doesn't drink can be quite sensual, can't it?"

Signed wooden box (shiho-zan) included
Rim 3.4cm × Body diameter 10.5cm × 10.3cm × Height 12.2cm; Capacity 450cc

Arimasa Kaneshige was born the third son of Intangible Cultural Property holder Sozan Kaneshige.

In 1975, he began studying pottery techniques under his father, Sozan Kaneshige.

He became independent in 1980 and held his first solo exhibition in Okayama.

He currently produces a wide range of wares, focusing on tea ceramics such as tea bowls, water jars, and flower vases.

In his tea bowls, which he particularly enjoys creating, he emphasizes the interior molding (mikomi) while pursuing a balance between usability and exterior form.

He has received the Sanyo Shimbun Award at the Prefectural Exhibition, the Encouragement Award at the Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Ceramics, and the Tanko Biennale Encouragement Award.

He received the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 2002 and the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award in 2018.

In 2019, he was designated as a holder of the Okayama Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property.

He is also dedicated to his solo exhibitions, which are held at various locations both within and outside the prefecture.
