p6815
Bizen sake cup
This is a newly kiln-fired Bizen sake cup (guinomi) by Mashiro Aiga, an artist known for creating uncompromising, spirited works.

Only a master like Aiga, who specializes in the firing process among the many Bizen ceramicists, could express such unique earthen colors and textures born from relentless firing.

It is rare to find a piece that so perfectly embodies the phrase "profit-disregarding," as this is one of only two completed sake cups remaining after he thoroughly fired them until they reached his personal standard of perfection.

The rim features a beautiful, solid coating of yellow sesame glaze (kigoma), but more impressive is the subtle tonal variation in the interior caused by multiple firings, creating a fascinating, "moist yet dry" texture reminiscent of antique Bizen ware that is truly captivating.

While Bizen surfaces typically lose their color and become harder as they are fired repeatedly, this piece features an exquisitely lustrous, almost wet-looking surface on its exterior, along with an intriguing, yuzu-skin-like texture that makes it look almost like glazed pottery.

In terms of form, it features a characteristically large Aiga-style cup shape, inviting you to set aside the details and simply enjoy your sake with gusto.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (Please note that shipping will take some time).
Diameter 10.1cm x 9.9cm x Height 4.6cm

Mashiro Aiga was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1972.

He graduated from the Okayama Prefectural Bizen Pottery Center in 1997.

In 2003, he built a fully underground anagama kiln in Sabukaze.

The following year, he built his second kiln, a semi-underground anagama, and continues to devote himself to his craft.
