p6824
Pale-Turning Black Shuten-dōji
This is a newly fired *sohen-guro* (blue-changing black) *shuzomi* (sake cup) by Hiroshi Sekigeki, who trained under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki before opening his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture.
This is the latest work, having just been removed from the kiln in December.

The piece uses the black slip characteristic of the Isezaki school, and it has been titled "Sohen-Guro" (Blue-changing Black) because the areas where natural ash glaze has accumulated turn a cobalt blue.

Beneath the golden-tinged *goma* (ash glaze) created by split pine wood, the cobalt blue of the "blue-change" appears to shimmer through, resulting in an exotic color reminiscent of a blue-ringed octopus.

The piece features an intriguing inverted triangular form created on a potter's wheel, and the contrast between the widely flared rim and the tightly constricted foot creates a dynamic atmosphere typical of the Isezaki school.

Unlike the exterior, the interior black has a deep, ink-like quality that draws the viewer in, perfectly suiting the tranquil aesthetic of the work.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time to ship).
Diameter 7.6cm × 7.5cm × Height 6.8cm

Hiroshi Sekigeki was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.

After graduating from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2013, he studied under Bizen ware Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki.

He became independent in 2017 and built his own kiln in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 2019.
