p6825
Hiyama Bizen Shuten
This is a brand new Hiyama Bizen sake cup (guinomi) that has just been removed from the kiln by Hiroshi Seki, an artist who trained under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki before opening his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in December.

This sake cup was fired in an anagama (tunnel kiln) built in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, using a mixture of Bizen clay and local Hiyama clay.

Perhaps due to the influence of the Hiyama soil, it has a rugged texture when held in the hand, and possesses a charm distinct from typical Bizen ware, such as a clay body with a pronounced whitish hue.

For this piece, the artist used the tatara slab-building technique to form the basic shape, then meticulously refined and adjusted the form by hand-shaping, resulting in an excellent silhouette that evokes the serenity and subtle irregularities of a Raku tea bowl.

The exterior features a sangiri finish with a unique luster and texture reminiscent of wet stone, while the interior draws the eye with matte "tobi-goma" (flung sesame) ash deposits scattered across a dry, crisp surface.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before the item can be shipped).
Diameter 7.0cm x 6.4cm x Height 7.8cm

Hiroshi Seki was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.

After graduating from the Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2013, he studied under Bizen ware Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki.

He became an independent artist in 2017 and built his own kiln in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 2019.
