p6826
Blue-glazed Black Pouring Bowl
This is a newly fired "Sohen-kuro" (blue-transformed black) katakuchi (sake server) by Hiroshi Seki, who established his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture after training under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki.
This is the latest piece, just removed from the kiln in December.

The work uses the black slip characteristic of the Isezaki school, and is titled "Sohen-kuro" because the areas where natural ash glaze accumulates turn cobalt blue.

Beneath the golden-tinged sesame glaze created by pine firewood, the cobalt blue of the "Sohen" emerges as if transparent, resulting in a striking color palette reminiscent of a blue-ringed octopus.

The blue transformation is particularly prominent from the rim to the sides, displaying a stunning indigo hue where it absorbs drops of sake as you pour.

For this piece, the form was built up using the slab-building technique and then meticulously refined by hand. The resulting silhouette is exceptional, evoking the serenity and gentle fluctuations of a Raku tea bowl.

The katakuchi features a simple, easy-to-use design, and the carefully crafted spout ensures a clean, drip-free pour.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (please note that it will take some time before shipment).
Width including spout: 13.8cm, Diameter: 10.5cm, Height: 10.2cm, Capacity: approx. 330cc

Hiroshi Seki was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.

After graduating from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2013, he studied under Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure in Bizen ware.

He became independent in 2017 and built his own kiln in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 2019.
