p6835
Hiyama Bizen Shuten
This is a brand-new Hiyama Bizen sake cup (guinomi) just out of the kiln by Yuji Seki, who opened his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture after training under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki.
This is a latest work, freshly fired and removed from the kiln in December.

This sake cup was fired in an anagama kiln built in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, using a blend of Bizen clay and local Hiyama clay.

Perhaps due to the influence of the Hiyama soil, it has a rough-hewn texture when held, and possesses a charm distinct from typical Bizen ware, with a clay quality that strongly brings out caramel-brown hues.

For this piece, the artist built up the form using slab construction before finely adjusting and refining the shape by hand; the resulting form, reminiscent of a raku tea bowl, evokes a sense of serenity and fluidity that is truly exceptional.
The exterior features a sangiri finish with a unique luster and texture like wet stone, while the interior is eye-catching with a dry, matte "tobi-goma" (flung sesame) ash glaze.
Signed wooden box to be provided at a later date (please note that it will take some time before shipping).
Diameter 6.7cm x 6.7cm x Height 7.3cm
Yuji Seki was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.

After graduating from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2013, he apprenticed under Bizen ware Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki.
He became independent in 2017 and built his own kiln in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 2019.
