p6878
Hikidashi square tea bowl
This is a *hikidashi* (drawn-out) square tea bowl by Sohei Takashima, who made a spectacular debut after completing his apprenticeship at the studio of Jun Isezaki and receiving the Japan Ceramic Society’s Award for Excellence in Contemporary Ceramics.
This *hikidashi* tea bowl was created by Takashima, who studied under the fifth Living National Treasure for Bizen ware, Jun Isezaki, before establishing his own studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City.

The *hikidashi* technique is a daring process in which works placed in a specific spot within the kiln are extracted while the kiln is at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius during the firing process; the sudden cooling results in the creation of fantastical scenery on the surface of the piece.

The bowl features a two-tone black-silver and gray color scheme that, from a distance, briefly resembles a white Raku piece. It possesses infinite nuances—such as a natural glaze that becomes translucent and shifts in intensity in response to the fine textures of the clay—that are nearly impossible to fully describe in words.

Combined with a style displaying structural prowess rarely seen in a novice artist—such as the meticulous shaving of the interior and the precise trimming of the four corners—this piece is elevated into a one-of-a-kind tea bowl.

Takashima crafts everything from tableware to tea utensils with exceptional care. Despite its overwhelming appearance that evokes the cosmos, this work offers a soft texture and a comfortable weight in the hand that makes one want to hold it forever.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that there will be a short delay before shipment).
Diameter 11.6cm x 11.4cm x Height 8.9cm

Sohei Takashima was born in Kushiro, Hokkaido, in 1991.

After graduating from the Department of Design at Doto University in 2014, he immediately began his apprenticeship under Jun Isezaki.

He is currently based independently in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He has received awards and honors including the Okayama Prefectural Art Exhibition Encouragement Award, selection for the Tanabe Museum of Art "Tea Form Exhibition," the Ceramic Art Exhibition Encouragement Award, selection for the Contemporary Tea Ceramic Exhibition, and the Japan Ceramic Society’s Award for Excellence in Contemporary Ceramics.
