p6924
Nezu-shino tea cup
These newly kiln-opened Nezumi-Shino (grey Shino) teacups are the work of Tomio Ochi, who has dedicated himself silently to firing kilns under the tutelage of Anjin Abe, pouring his unfulfilled aspirations into his ceramics.

This Nezumi-Shino reflects a powerful commitment to his craft, providing a definitive answer to the questions of what "Tomio Ochi's" Shino truly is, and what it means for him to work with the Nezumi-Shino style.

While a typical Nezumi-Shino might evoke images of a bluish-grey hue, this piece features a deep, dark brownish iron slip, resulting in a bold and uncompromising finish.

The final feldspar glaze is not the thick, pillowy texture often seen in contemporary Shino, but rather a thin, firm, and taut application that further accentuates the piece's rugged aesthetic.

True to the concept of the work, the unglazed clay areas are fired thoroughly, with a dense, pale orange clay forming a powerful foot rim.

No box
Diameter 8.2cm x 8.1cm x Height 7.9cm

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School.

From 1969, while working at a company, he devoted himself to the study of painting and sculpture at Taka Bijutsu.

In 1976, he received guidance while serving as a kiln assistant to Anjin Abe in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the grounds of Anjin Abe’s studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He incorporates his experience in sculpture and painting into his Bizen ware pottery.
