p6955
Ao-Shino Sake Cup
This is a new Blue Shino sake cup (guinomi) by Takashi Baba, an artist born in Imbe who has loved Bizen ware since childhood and finds his life's joy in crafting works and firing kilns.
This piece was taken from the kiln around April 2023. It is a unique work created by applying Shino glaze to Bizen clay and firing it in a Bizen climbing kiln.

While the overall character of the piece follows the tradition of Shino ware, the overlapping effects of the climbing kiln firing have created a luxurious landscape where Shino and Bizen aesthetics transition into one another, including the appearance of "sesame" (goma) ash glaze in the interior.

Although Mr. Baba has periodically created Blue Shino using cobalt, this piece features improvements to both the cobalt and feldspar glaze, evolving into a completely new form of Blue Shino that overflows with the signature style of an artist dedicated to the "blue kiln transmutation" (ao-yohen) of cobalt.

While previous Blue Shino works primarily featured a sky-blue glaze, this iteration powers up to a striking cobalt blue, resulting in a fresh and crisp aesthetic characteristic of Mr. Baba’s commitment to expressing the color blue.

The feldspar-based glaze, a hallmark of Shino ware, has been enhanced to provide significant volume, and the way it layers with the rich cobalt blue glaze resembles white clouds trailing across a blue sky.

The orthodox form, combined with the texture of the glaze, makes it very comfortable to use.

Includes signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.7cm × 7.7cm × Height 5.5cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ceramic artist Shosuke Baba.

Having considered a future as a potter since childhood, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden his perspective on ceramics.

After graduating from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006, he honed his skills at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

Currently, he is active primarily through solo exhibitions at department stores.
