p6962
Ao-Shino Free Cup
This is a new Blue Shino free cup by Takashi Baba, an artist born in Imbe who has loved Bizen ware since childhood and finds his life's joy in crafting works and firing kilns.
This piece was removed from the kiln around April 2023. It is a unique creation made by applying Shino glaze to Bizen clay and firing it in a Bizen wood-fired climbing kiln.

While the piece follows the tradition of Shino ware, the overlapping firing process in the climbing kiln creates a luxurious interplay of Shino and Bizen aesthetics, with features such as *goma* (ash glaze) appearing in the interior.

Mr. Baba has regularly created Blue Shino using cobalt, but this work features improvements to both the cobalt and feldspar glaze, evolving into an entirely new Blue Shino that perfectly captures his signature commitment to the *so-yohen* (blue transformation) effect.

While previous Blue Shino pieces primarily featured a sky-blue glaze tone, this iteration sees that sky blue powered up into a deep cobalt blue, resulting in the fresh and clear coloration characteristic of Mr. Baba’s dedication to expressing the color blue.

In addition to the aforementioned cobalt blue—evoking the azure sky—and the white glaze tones, the lower part of the piece reveals a madder red color that shines through the underlying Bizen clay. By combining Bizen clay with Shino glaze, the work has been elevated to a new level.

The orthodox form, combined with the texture of the glaze, makes it extremely easy to use.

No box included (*A paulownia wood box can be made upon request)
Diameter 9.1cm × 8.5cm × Height 10.1cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ware artist Shosuke Baba.

Having decided to become a ceramic artist from a young age, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden his perspective on pottery.

After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in sculpture in 2006, he honed his skills at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

He is currently active mainly through solo exhibitions at department stores.
