p6974
Bizen Yohen Blue Sake Cup
Born in Imbe and having loved Bizen ware since childhood, Takashi Baba finds his life's joy in creating his works and firing his kilns. This is a brand-new Bizen *yohen* (kiln-transmuted) blue *guinomi* (sake cup), freshly removed from the kiln.
This is his latest work, just taken out of the kiln in April 2023.

This *guinomi* is from his *Yohen Ao* (Kiln-Transmuted Blue) series, an evolution of the black Bizen ware using slip decoration that Mr. Baba excels at, in which portions of the black surface have transformed into a vivid cobalt blue.

The most eye-catching feature is the intense cobalt blue coloration titled "Yohen Ao," but the other black areas also exhibit a unique gunmetal-like black resulting from a strong reaction to the firing process.

The *goma* (ash glaze) flowing from the rim is also truly fascinating; the calm, slightly grayish tone of the *goma*—a signature characteristic of Mr. Baba’s kilns—brilliantly accentuates the black and blue hues.

The modern spatula-carved details, reflecting Mr. Baba’s background in sculpture, are also intriguing, adding further depth and shadow to this work colored in black and blue.

The vivid blue, cool black, and modern form come together in a trinity, resulting in a piece that is unforgettable once seen.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 6.3cm x 6.2cm x Height 5.8cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ceramic artist Shosuke Baba.

Considering becoming a ceramic artist from a young age, he chose to study sculpture during his university years to broaden his ceramic perspective.

He graduated from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006 and honed his skills at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

He is currently active, primarily holding solo exhibitions at department stores.
