p6996
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen kiln-transmutation sake cup, fresh from the kiln by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense while having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in June 2023.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of drawing out the character of the clay through daring, risk-taking kiln firings, the outer surface features a deep, black, ash-covered kiln-transmutation reminiscent of damp charcoal, with parts even displaying a subtle, shimmering silvery ash-covered effect.

While Koriki-sensei primarily uses rice-field clay mixed with mountain clay, he has successfully achieved a rich scarlet hue in this piece by slightly increasing the proportion of mountain clay.

The vivid scarlet color is almost searing to the eyes, yet in keeping with his teacher’s philosophy of prioritizing clay preparation above all else, it possesses a dignified elegance without a hint of garishness or crudeness.

The interior also features a deep, vibrant scarlet across its entire surface, offering an exquisite backdrop for sake, and is perfectly accented with the small circular "marunuke" mark that has become Koriki-sensei’s trademark.

Though his recent forms have shifted toward a slightly thinner construction, Koriki-sensei has maintained a satisfying weight by leaving some thickness at the base, despite the refined shaping of the rim.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (we apologize, but please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 6.5cm × 6.3cm × Height 5.6cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has continued to hold annual solo exhibitions ever since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition for the first time.
