p6998
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a brand-new Bizen yōhen sake cup, just out of the kiln, by Yoshiteru Kōriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yūhō Kaneshige.
This is a latest work, freshly removed from the kiln in June 2023.

True to Kōriki-sensei's style of bringing out the character of the clay through bold, risk-taking kiln firing, this sake cup features a superb finish that leans heavily toward the "firing" side of the balance between "firing" and "clay."
The thoroughly fired ash-covered yōhen creates a magnificent landscape reminiscent of swirling flames within the kiln, with some parts showing a rich, lustrous sea cucumber-like glaze, while others display a dull, metallic ash-covered finish.
The "nuke" (clear area) on the front reveals a hard, well-fired clay body, while the shaded areas retain a rich, deep purple-red hue, offering an intriguing, paradoxical expression where the intense firing actually highlights the quality of the clay.
Moreover, the intense firing has layered gold hues over the shaded areas, ensuring that despite the focus on "firing," the piece retains the distinct charm of Bizen stoneware.
While Kōriki-sensei has recently shifted toward slightly thinner forms, this piece maintains a well-balanced weight, with a refined rim while keeping some thickness in the body.
Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time for shipment).
Diameter 6.8cm × 6.7cm × Height 5.3cm
Yoshiteru Kōriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yūhō Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become independent, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition for the first time.
