p7003
Bizen sake cup
This is a brand new Bizen yohen sake cup, fresh from the kiln, by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense while having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is a latest work, fired in June of Reiwa 5 (2023).

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through daring, risk-taking firing techniques, this is a simple sake cup that leans significantly toward the "clay" element over the "firing" element.

Composed with only a minimal amount of sesame glaze, the piece is extremely simple. While it is Bizen ware that allows you to enjoy the scenery and coloring of natural glaze, the finish looks as if the clay is being desperately protected from the flames.

Overall, it has a moist, soft expression characteristic of earthenware, but the quality of the clay—particularly where the sesame glaze did not land—combines a smooth texture with ever-changing hues that you could gaze at forever.

While it is a very simply fired sake cup that puts the clay's quality center stage, the foot is powerfully carved in the tradition passed down from Sozan-sensei, making for an interesting cup that offers a completely different impression before and after taking a drink.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.4cm × 6.4cm × Height 5.8cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to work independently, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition for the first time.
