p7004
Bizen beer mug
This new Bizen beer mug has just been removed from the kiln by Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, who continues to lead the world of Bizen ware with an inexhaustible creative power.
This latest work was removed from the kiln in June 2023.

Fired slowly for about 10 days in a semi-underground anagama (tunnel kiln), this piece showcases the quintessential finish of Isezaki Bizen, featuring a blend of goma (ash glaze), hidaski (fire-cord markings), itogoma (thread-like ash), sangiri (reduction firing effects), and gradients of scarlet.

While anagama kilns are famous for scenery where goma and hidaski mingle, this piece was placed in a position less exposed to direct flames, allowing the wrapped rice straw to remain distinct, resulting in scenery closer to traditional hidaski.

The rice straw wrapped around the piece has transferred a rich hidaski pattern onto the clay surface; the color shifts dramatically in response to subtle changes in the firing environment, turning dark near the sangiri areas and becoming a vivid scarlet near the white clay.

On the inside, ash has accumulated like falling powder snow, and it is fascinating to see how the goma remains on the walls, clinging to the throwing lines left by the potter’s fingers.

Although the box is inscribed as a "beer mug," it can naturally also be used as a teacup.

Signed wooden box (shiho-zan style)
Diameter 7.2cm × 7.1cm × Height 9.6cm

Jun Isezaki was born as the second son of Yozan Isezaki, a master of ceramic handicrafts.
