p7013
Bizen yohen sake cup
This new Bizen kiln-transformation sake cup has just been removed from the kiln by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

This is his latest work, just fired in June of Reiwa 5 (2023).

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through bold kiln-firing techniques that fear no risk, this sake cup allows the enjoyer to appreciate both the "firing" and the "clay" through its magma-like kiln transformation.

The faint, dull sheen of the ash-covered surface and the sweet, fruit-like scarlet hue are perfectly balanced, making this a piece that is a joy to behold, use, and—of course—nurture over time.

The interior also features a rich, vivid scarlet covering the entire surface, ensuring that the sake inside will look exquisite, while the black spots—caused by the eruption of iron and other minerals within the clay—add a refined, weathered texture.

The smooth, unpretentious form, finished on a slow-turning potter's wheel, pairs beautifully with the striking scarlet to provide a wonderful feel in the hand.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.3cm × 6.2cm × Height 5.8cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become an independent artist, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has continued to hold solo exhibitions annually since then.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Sculpture Exhibition for the first time.
