p7036
Aoshino Free Cup
This is a new Blue Shino free cup by Takashi Baba, an artist born in Inbe who has loved Bizen ware since childhood and finds his life's joy in creating works and firing kilns.
This piece was removed from the kiln around April 2023. It is a unique work created by applying Shino glaze to Bizen clay and firing it in a Bizen wood-fired climbing kiln.

While the overall work follows the style of Shino ware, the overlapping effect of the climbing kiln firing creates a luxurious piece where the aesthetics of Shino and Bizen intermingle, including the appearance of "goma" (ash glaze) in the interior.

Although Mr. Baba has regularly created Blue Shino using cobalt in the past, this work represents a completely new evolution of Blue Shino with improvements to both the cobalt and feldspar glaze sections, overflowing with the signature style of an artist who is dedicated to the kiln transmutation of cobalt blue.

While Blue Shino has traditionally featured a sky-blue glaze as its main characteristic, this piece sees that sky blue powered up into a vibrant cobalt blue, resulting in a fresh and crisp hue that reflects Mr. Baba's commitment to the expression of "ao" (blue).

In addition to the cobalt blue and white glaze tones that evoke the aforementioned azure sky, the base of the piece reveals a madder red color where the underlying Bizen clay shows through, taking the work to even greater heights through the combination of Bizen clay and Shino glaze.

The orthodox form, paired with the texture of the glaze, makes it very easy to use.

No box included (*A paulownia wood box can be made upon request)
Diameter 8.8cm x 8.6cm x Height 9.9cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ceramic artist Shosuke Baba.

Thinking he would become a ceramic artist from a young age, he chose to major in sculpture during university to broaden the scope of his pottery.

He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in sculpture in 2006, then joined the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture to refine his skills.

He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

He is currently active, primarily holding solo exhibitions at department stores.
