p7048
Bizen Hidasuki Teacup
This is a newly fired Bizen Hidasuki teacup by Yoshiteru Kouriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

This is a brand new piece, taken fresh from the kiln in June 2023.

It is a deeply tasteful climbing-kiln Hidasuki teacup, carefully fired after being sealed inside a sagger to prevent natural ash glaze from adhering to its surface.

A departure from the typical combination of mogusa clay and Hidasuki fired in electric kilns, this piece features a faint, bluish-grey clay body layered with subtle specks of naturally introduced ash glaze. In contrast to the elegant and vibrant mogusa Hidasuki, it presents a rugged, rustic aesthetic.

True to Kouriki-sensei’s meticulous approach to preparing his clay, the cup offers a remarkably smooth texture that belies its wild appearance—a quality that rivals the refined surface feel of electric-kiln works.

While designed as a teacup, its generous size and wide opening make it well-suited for use as a shochu cup as well.

No box included (*a paulownia wood box can be made upon request).
Diameter 8.8cm x 8.7cm x Height 9.3cm

Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years under Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige beginning in 1989.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Chanoyu Zokei-ten (Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Forms) for the first time.
