p7073
Bizen Beer Mug
This is a new Bizen beer mug by Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, an artist who continues to lead the world of Bizen ware with an inexhaustible creative power.
This is his latest work, fired in June 2023.

Fired carefully for about 10 days in a semi-underground anagama kiln, this piece showcases a finish representative of Isezaki Bizen, featuring a gradient of sesame (goma), fire-cord (hidasuki), sangiri, and scarlet hues.

While anagama kilns are typically known for scenery where sesame and hidasuki mingle, this piece was placed in a position less exposed to direct flames, allowing the wrapped rice straw to remain distinct and creating a look closer to traditional hidasuki.

The rice straw wrapped around the piece has transferred a rich hidasuki pattern onto the clay surface; the color changes vividly in response to subtle shifts in the firing environment, turning black near the sangiri areas and a vibrant scarlet near the white clay sections.

Inside, natural ash glaze has accumulated like falling snow, settling along the finger marks left by the potter’s wheel, which creates an intriguing effect.

Although labeled as a beer mug on the box, it can, of course, also be used as a teacup.

Signed wooden box (Shihozanshi type) included.
Diameter 7.7cm × 7.6cm × Height 9.5cm

Jun Isezaki was born as the second son of Yozan Isezaki, a master of ceramic craft, and learned pottery from an early age before fully entering the field after graduating from the Okayama University special art course in 1959.

His work spans a wide range, from traditional items such as vases, plates, and tea ceremony wares to ceramic walls and sculptural objects.

In his creative process, he places great importance on both forming and firing, utilizing the unique characteristics of his materials and kilns (anagama, climbing kilns, and electric kilns) to create a style imbued with a modern sensibility.

He is also widely recognized as a leading figure in relief art, having unveiled numerous works.

He was certified as a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1966 and served as a special art lecturer at Okayama University for nine years starting in 1978.

In 1998, he and his elder brother, Mitsuru Isezaki, were both designated as Okayama Prefecture Holders of Important Intangible Cultural Properties, and that same year, he became the Secretary General of the Chugoku Branch of the Japan Kōgei Association.

In July 2004, he was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) by the Japanese government.

Awards include: Kaneshige Toyo Prize, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Prize, Sanyo Shimbun Prize, Excellence Award at the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition, and many others / Juror for Prefectural Exhibitions
